Common Challenges
1. Age Gap or Short Relationship
Immigration may scrutinize marriages with a significant age gap or those formed after a short acquaintance. Provide thorough relationship evidence.
2. Income Requirements
The Japanese spouse (or sponsor) should demonstrate stable income. There's no fixed minimum, but household income of 200,000+ yen/month is generally expected.
3. Previous Immigration Issues
If the foreign spouse has overstayed or been deported, additional documentation and waiting periods may apply.
4. Language Barrier
If you and your spouse don't share a common language fluently, be prepared to explain how you communicate (e.g., translation apps, interpreter).
Visa Duration
- Initial: Usually 1 year
- Renewal: 1, 3, or 5 years depending on the stability of the marriage and immigration history
- Path to Permanent Residency: Eligible after 1 year of marriage + 3 years of residence in Japan (simplified requirements)
Tips for a Successful Application
- Be thorough with documentation — More evidence is better than less
- Consistent information — Ensure dates and details match across all documents
- Translate everything — All non-Japanese documents need certified translations
- Photos matter — Include a variety showing genuine relationship
- Answer the questionnaire honestly — Immigration cross-checks answers
