Types of Student Visas
Japan's student visa covers enrollment at:

- Vocational Schools (専門学校) — Technical and professional training

Eligibility Requirements
- Acceptance letter from a recognized Japanese educational institution
- Financial proof — Sufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses (typically 1.5-2 million yen per year)
- Educational background — Completed 12+ years of education (for university) or equivalent
- Japanese language ability — JLPT N5 or above for language schools; varies by institution
- No immigration violations in Japan or other countries
Application Process
Step 1: Get Accepted by a School
Apply to your chosen school in Japan. Once accepted, the school will typically assist with the visa application process.
Step 2: Certificate of Eligibility (COE)
Your school usually applies for a Certificate of Eligibility (在留資格認定証明書) on your behalf at the local Immigration Bureau. This takes 1-3 months.
Step 3: Apply for Visa at Embassy
Once you receive the COE, take it to the Japanese embassy or consulate in your home country along with:
- Valid passport
- Visa application form
- Photo (4.5cm x 3.5cm)
- Certificate of Eligibility (original)
- Proof of financial support
Step 4: Enter Japan
After receiving your visa, enter Japan within 3 months of the COE issue date. At the airport, you'll receive your Residence Card (在留カード).

You can extend your stay by applying for a Period of Stay Extension before it expires.
Working While Studying
Student visa holders can work up to 28 hours per week (40 hours during school breaks) with a Permission to Engage in Activity Other Than That Permitted (資格外活動許可). Apply at Immigration Bureau after arriving in Japan.
